MCINTOSH MUGS

Mugs, mugs, mugs...they come in every size. shape and color. And...Every price point. But...like everything else in life, there are some things that just shine a tad above the rest and we think that McIntosh Mugs are one of those things.

Bird Garden Mug Pair

McIntosh Mugs started with a comment at a cocktail party in Germany.  A salesman from the Caribbean whose Mother had a shop in Bermuda said, "The best product my Mother ever sold were mugs with paintings by Bermuda artists".  An idea was born!  What about Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven on bone china mugs for Canada. And...with this seed, today, many many mugs later, there are a wide variety of designs (and of course still including Tom Thomson, Van Gogh, Robert Bateman and many others). Below was the first set of Tom Thomson Mugs produced by McIntosh.   Still a fav with all.

VAN GOGH IS SEEN AS

A QUINTESSENTIAL

TORTURED ARTIST

Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They are characterized by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Not commercially successful in his career, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, which eventually led to his suicide at age thirty-seven.

VAN GOGH

STARRY, STARRY NIGHT

Van Gogh loved the stars.   He painted many versions of his Starry, Starry Night vision.  Everyone has a favorite.  This is mine.

BATEMAN GETS NATURE PERFECTLY

Robert McLellan Bateman is an illustrious Canadian painter, born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. From early on, Bateman was a keen naturalist who always painted wildlife and nature-beginning with a representational style, to cubism and to abstract expressionism. He is an officer of the Order of Canada, a holder of 14 honorary doctorates, declared as one of the top 100 environmental proponents of the 20th century by the Audubon Society of Canada. As a revered educator, there are three schools now bearing his name.  At 95, Robert Bateman lives on Salt Spring Island, BC where he still paints beauty. We adore Bateman art.

POLAR BEARS

Bateman captured the curiosity, the mystery and the beauty of the polar bear with majestic ice flows as the backdrop. Incredible! Perfect for our Polar Bear Cafe customers.

TOM THOMSON

An artist often credited with being the artistic inspiration for Canada's Group of Seven. Tom Thomson, born in Claremont, Ontario, in 1877, was a keen woodsman and as friend and colleague of many of the Group of Seven artists, he introduced the color and style of Lake Superior beauty into the visionary paintings that were produced in the years after his death.

CANOE & WEST WIND

Thomson was an avid canoe hound (rumour has it that he died young in a canoe accident in a location much like is depicted on these two wonderful mugs).

THE GROUP OF SEVEN

The Group of Seven, 1920 to 1933, was a pioneering group of Canadian landscape painters who established a distinct national art movement by depicting rugged, vibrant, and, at the time, unconventional interpretations of the Canadian wilderness. They focused on bright colours and bold forms to capture the Canadian Shield and Arctic, breaking away from traditional European conventions

We at Rob McIntosh are going to say Thank You for that one comment that energized the idea to begin McIntosh Mugs. Say "Thank You" every time something happens that you like. This will give you hundreds of "Thank You's" every day. It would be impossible for one to be angry or upset for more than a second if this was done by all. This year when so much is happening politically in Canada and around the world, one has to deliberately be grateful for what we do have (rather than worrying about what we don"t have).  We are so excited about the great new selection of products that have seemingly just dropped into our shops this year- a new beauty section with Inis (the scent of the sea) products fom Ireland, Lemon and Lavender (a whole range of cool, useful and fun items for skin, hair etc), Naked Bee (definitely the softest, most soft fragrant and most effective bee product we've ever carried) and this is just the tip of the iceberg with regard to new.  As usual, we encourage you to come and see, have a Canadiano, a muffin and a chat in our Polar Bear Cafe. Our great Thai food truck from Thum's retaurant just phoned yesterday and is coming back this spring.  (This is not a pun but their spring rolls are unbelievable).  I could go on and on but for today, be thankful.  And...if you'd like to give us a review or share, we'd be thankful.  Thanks.   Barb
