Historically, Royal Doulton Bunnykins' artwork originated from Sister Mary Barbara Bailey (née Barbara Vernon Bailey), the daughter of Cuthbert Bailey, general manager of Doulton's Burslem factory during the 1930s. Unbeknownst to the world, Barbara Bailey was not a professional illustrator, but a nun in the Augustinian Canonesses of the Lateran which would have shocked the 1930's public. Kind of cool nowadays that she followed her vision. In 1937, the
late Queen Mother first saw examples of Bunnykins and since then it has been a regular in Royal nurseries around the world. And..in a lot of nurseries (and kitchens) that are not royal as well. I remember when my son dropped a bunnykins bowl and it chipped badly so I used it to feed milk to my cat because I didn't want to throw it away. (It was safe for the cat in case I offend cat lovers).

Royal Doulton Bunnykins! Who didn't have a set when you were a baby? Who didn't give someone sometime a Bunnykins set at a baby shower? Since 1934, we all have loved Bunnykins so that when the bone china Bunnykins sets were discontinued and re-introduced in ivory colored earthenware, we were really pleased. The difference between the two is in the sharpness of the color and the strength of the pottery. One cannot stop progress.

Bunnies are so much a part of Easter. Why? In Germany, rabbits have been associated with spring and fertility since the pre-Christian era. In fact, the rabbit was the symbol of a Germanic goddess. (This connection isn’t surprising when you consider that rabbits are able to breed at a young age and can produce several litters in a year. If you lived in Lancaster, you would see this in practise. Do we have rabbits.) It is believed that this pagan symbol most likely
merged with Christian traditions in 17th century Germany. We are delighted to be able to respect tradition along with uniqueness in our shops.
