National Dog Day is celebrated annually worldwide on August 26th to honor all dogs, recognize their contributions to society, and promote dog adoption. Let’s take a look at some incredible facts about dogs to help you get a better understanding of these amazing creatures. Did you know, for example, that the most successful hunter in the world is the African Hunting Dog? These dogs are successful in 50 to 70 percent of their hunts. They even hold the Guinness World Record for it. Another Guinness World Record goes to the Saluki for being the oldest
dog breed. This breed actually dates back to 329BC; in Ancient Egypt where these dogs were kept as Royal Pets. There are rumors that this breed can be traced back even further, as there are carvings located in the South of Iraq of a dog that looks very much like this breed around 7,000 BC. National Dog Day was started in 2004 by Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige. It was set up to celebrate all breeds, mixed and pure and to help galvanize the public about the number of dogs that need to be rescued, either from public shelters, or rescue organizers. This day has been adopted around the world but we think the most important thing to do on National Dog Day is to
treat your dog to some extra love. Give them lots of belly rubs and kisses to let them know you care. The most important way you can celebrate is simple loving your best furriend and making sure he or she is properly cared for.
