PRODUCE KEEPERS

Nothing like progress. Over the last few years, I've written several newsletters promoting Produce Keepers. One of my favorite topics. Produce keepers are containers designed specifically to help keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer and reduce food waste by creating better storage conditions (than a simple plastic bag or fridge crisper). Pretty neat.

BIG OR SMALL OR ALL? 

What size is right?  Produce keepers control airflow and moisture (there is a removable elevated basket inside) by lifting produce off the bottom so air can circulate and moisture doesn't pool. It helps to control soggy spots. There is an adjustable vent on the lid that lets you set the right amount of humidity for different produce (eg.leafy greens vs carrots). The basket can work as a colander-great for rinsing.  Keep produce unwashed until use (or make sure everything is totally dry) because the moisture will produce problems. Wash or rinse when you're ready to eat. Almost every fruit and vegetable benefits from being kept in a produce keeper with the exception of bananas, potatoes and onions which need a different space.. A little pricey at the beginning but you save money continuously by reducing waste.

A small produce keeper that actually works perfectly. Yesterday, I used this size for 2 garlic gloves, a ginger root, and a lemon so that when I make winter tea later today, I  would be organized.

This is my favorite size. I have two. This will hold a medium basket of strawberries, raspberries or blueberries perfectly. Spinach stays fresh for longer, celery stays crisp for ages and my best speech concerns lettuce. Wow. I love all kinds of sandwiches with a slice of Romaine and this works like a charm for at least a week or two.

Staying healthy is always a project. At Rob McIntosh, we believe that having fun is a big part of keeping ourselves and you guys healthy.
